SAMBO
Sambo was developed in the 1920s by the Russian military as a hand-to-hand fighting system for soldiers. It incorporates the most effective techniques from other martial arts like boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Judo, and many other combat styles. It’s a practical fighting style that doesn’t waste time on fancy techniques.
Sambo can be broken up into the two popular forms practiced today: combat and sport Sambo. Sport sambo is very similar to Judo, as it uses many of the same throws. However, there’s a more significant emphasis on ground fighting, including pins, leg locks, and joint locks. Strikes are not allowed, and neither are chokes.
Combat Sambo is a more comprehensive style that resembles mixed martial arts. Kicks, punches, elbows, and knees are all permitted. Throws, wrestling-style takedowns, and joint locks are allowed. Techniques that are typically deemed illegal in most sports, like headbutts and soccer kicks on grounded opponents, are sometimes allowed in combat Sambo.
JUDO
Judo (translates as “the gentle way”) was developed in Japan by Dr Jigoro Kano towards the end of the 19th century and has evolved from being a martial art into one of the world’s most popular sports. Since its inclusion in the 1964 Olympic Games Judo has progressed rapidly and is, without doubt, the worlds most popular combat sport.
While there may be much focus on competition Judo given its prominence in the Olympics, Judo is however much more than a sport. Judo also involves the practice of self-defence, katas’ and a focus on personal development and therefore is seen to be effective as an educational system in both physical and moral spheres.
GRAPPLING
Grappling is a fighting technique based on throws, trips, sweeps, clinch fighting, ground fighting and submission holds. Grappling appeared in 1990–2010.
Grappling contests often involve takedowns and ground control, and may end when a contestant concedes defeat. Should there be no winner after the match time-limit has lapsed, competition judges will determine the winner based on who exerted more control.
